John is a 1977 graduate of Western Illinois University, where he received a Bachelor of Arts with high honors. While at Western, he was a student representative on the University’s Judicial Inquiry Board, and a member of the historical honor society Phi Alpha Theta. He attended Chicago Kent College of Law, where he placed first in the school’s annual Moot Court competition, and led the Moot Court Society’s nationally recognized labor law team to the Wagner Competition finals in New York City. After graduating with honors from Chicago Kent, John worked for several years in the field of labor, employment, and ERISA law, experience which he brings to bear on the issues presented in medical negligence cases related to insurance companies and their financial products, such as HMO’s and PPO’s. He also has unique experience and expertise in issues such as subrogation, lien rights, and allocation of proceeds between claims.

During his nearly twenty years with the Law Office of Kenneth C. Chessick, M.D., John has participated in every aspect of the firm’s success.

John is a graduate of the National Institute of Trial Lawyers Trial Advocacy course. He has been licensed by the State of Illinois as an attorney since 1981, and has consistently been recognized as highly qualified by his peers as reflected in his Martindale-Hubbell ratings, and in 2007 by Chicago magazine as an Illinois Super Lawyer. John is certified as a member of the Trial Bar of the Northern District of Illinois Federal Court, and is admitted to the Southern District of Illinois and the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.

He is a member of the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association, Illinois State Bar Association, American Association for Justice and has been a member of the Boone, Winnebago, and Cook County Bar Associations, as well as the American Bar Association.

John has secured settlements and judgments for scores of clients of the Law Office of Kenneth C. Chessick, M.D., including a nearly $1 million dollar, record verdict for dental negligence in Winnebago County. He has prosecuted more than twenty appeals in multiple Districts of the Illinois Appellate Court. His appellate work includes landmark cases involving issues as diverse as HMO liability for medical negligence and the statute of limitations applicable to the claims of children injured at birth.

John is familiar with and attuned to the issues that face working families today. He is married, father of five children, and is active in his local community of Belvidere, Illinois, where he is a member of the Boone County Conservation District and the Education Commission at St. James School.
